Summary of July 15th Severe Weather

Portions of Lower Michigan were affected by strong to severe thunderstorms during the afternoon and early evening hours of July 15th. A few isolated storms began to develop between 1 and 2 pm in a line from near Grand Rapids to Big Rapids. These storms expanded into a more solid line of storms as it reached a Clare to Ionia county line. The storms were responsible for injuries to four teens that were struck by lightning near Vestaburg in Montcalm county. The storms increased in intensity as they reached Gratiot county, and produced some wind damage in the form of trees and powerlines down in the vicinity of Alma.

The following animation shows the evolution of the storm which produced damaging winds in Alma.  This is a vertical cross-section of precipitation between 2:37 pm and 2:55 pm. The shades of dark red above 20,000 feet imply hail, which formed aloft. As the hail began to fall into warmer air below, melting caused the air to cool. The cooled air accelerated toward the ground as a downdraft, which impacted the ground in Alma and spread out as strong straight-line winds.

The storms then continued to development from near St. Johns to near Kalamazoo and Battle Creek. The southern line of storms became fairly organized and produced wind damage in Portage, Battle Creek, Lansing and Jackson where greater than 60 mph wind gusts occurred. These storms affected the same areas for an extended period of time, and produced heavy rainfall. Flooding was reported in Battle Creek where up to 4 inches of rain fell over a period of 2 to 3 hours.

The radar animation below shows where the storms were located between 3:55 pm and 7:15 pm.  The first line of storms, which developed ahead of the cold front, produced heavy rain and strong winds across Kalamazoo, Calhoun, and Jackson counties.  The second line of storms, triggered by the cold front, produced additional heavy rain and flooding in areas of Calhoun county.

Below is a summary of severe weather reports for Thursday, July 15th.
