Snowfall Event...Mon Jan 3 - Tues Jan 4

A clipper type system advanced toward the Great Lakes region from the west Monday afternoon January 3rd with snow beginning towards evening. Snow with a high water content falling on slightly below freezing road surfaces resulted in very slippery conditions over Western Lower Michigan Monday evening.  A truck jack-knifed during the evening hours on Interstate 96 near Walker. The National Weather Service Doppler Radar image below from midnight shows moisture streaming in from the west, interacting with Lake Michigan producing areas of light to moderate snow across West Central Lower Michigan.

Midnight Tuesday January 4th

Winds overnight became more southwesterly ahead of the clipper pushing lake effect snow bands into West Central Lower Michigan from Grand Haven north up the Lakeshore. The image below shows the snow bands affecting Whitehall and Pentwater. It was snowing in Ludington at this time as well, but lake effect snow is a rather shallow weather phenomenon and radar beams typically overshoot the snow at greater distances from the radar site.

700AM Tuesday January 4th

The associated cold front with the clipper system pushed through the region during the midday hours of Tuesday creating a very narrow band of heavier snow along and ahead of the front. Visibilities in this snow band dropped to near zero at times as it passed through producing quick accumulations in snow. Case in point is the 3.5 inches reported in Paw Paw, all of which fell during the daylight hours of Tuesday, mainly with this band of snow on the front. The band of snow caused accidents along Interstate 94 which had to be shut down near Paw Paw and Mattawan.

Noon Tuesday January 4th

The map below is an estimation of snowfall across the area. Reports are received from Cooperative Weather Observers, CoCoRahs Weather Observers, the media, Road Commission offices, Law Enforcement officials, trained weather spotters, the general public among others. We rely on these reports to help determine snowfall amounts. The map may not accurately depict snowfall in all areas.
