Snowfall Event...Thurs Jan 6 - Sun Jan 9

A long duration snow event took place across Southwest Lower Michigan between Thursday morning January 6th and Sunday morning January 9th. The event began with clipper system related snow moving through the area Thursday morning the 6th which transitioned into northwest flow lake effect snow by Thursday evening. Northwest flow lake effect snow continued Thursday night into Friday morning before the winds shifted to west during the day on Friday.

The snow in westerly flow on Friday perked up a bit as an upper level disturbance dropped in from the northwest aloft. Northerly flow took over Friday night which set up dominant bands of snow along the Lake Michigan shorline.

The northerly flow lake effect snow from Friday night into Saturday produced the heaviest snow of this long duration event. Some of the higher totals from the event included 23 inches of snow north of Scottville in Mason County and over 36 inches of snow in North Central Indiana at South Bend. In general, the Lake Michigan coastal cities received 8 to 12 inches of snow over the course of the three day event, with the most falling in the northerly flow Friday night into Saturday morning.

Case in point...here are the totals from an observer in Mason County 6.6 miles northwest of Scottville...

Thursday/Thursday night snow total...4.6 inches

Friday/Friday night snow total...15.4 inches

Saturday/Saturday night snow total...2.3 inches

The following three radar images are from 7pm Friday, 1am Saturday and 7 am Saturday. It was during this time that the heaviest snow fell. The images show a north/south orientated band of snow impacting mainly the lakeshore counties.
