Summary of January 22 Lake Effect Event

An area of low pressure moved across northern lower Michigan during the day on Saturday. This area of low pressure brought light snow to most of the state. Locations along Lake Michigan from Holland northward saw the snowfall become locally moderate to heavy at times as a southwest wind off of the relatively warmer waters of Lake Michigan helped to add quite a boost to the snow.  A Lake Effect Snow Advisory was issued from midnight to 4pm for numerous lakeshore counties.  The lake snow bands proved to be treacherous for some drivers, as a host of primary road closures occurred as a result of accidents, particularly around the Grand Rapids area where only about 2 to 3 inches of snow generally fell during the day.  Ironically, lakeshore areas saw double or triple that amount of snow with fewer reported impacts.

Lake effect events can create highly variable accumulations within a single county, depending on how the bands are organized.  A difference of a few miles may mean substantially higher or lower snowfall totals regardless of whether or not your county is under an advisory or warning.  Many locations saw between 4 to 8 inches of snow close to the lakeshore from South Haven up toward Scottville. Some localized areas from Holland to Muskegon saw over 8 inches of snow, with the Muskegon County Airport coming in with an impressive 10.7 inches of snow through 7pm!  That is a new daily record for Muskegon.  The previous record was 9.7 inches of snow set in 1963.
