Southwest Michigan Chapter of the AMS and NWA

A new professional chapter for meteorologists and weather enthusiasts alike is now serving Southwest Michigan!  In 2010, the groundwork was put in to develop a local chapter of both the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association.  Paperwork was submitted, and both organizations approved the start-up of a new local chapter that now serves the Southwest Michigan region.

This chapter, called the Southwest Michigan Chapter of the AMS and NWA, is open to not only professional meteorologists in the area but also to anyone who has an interest in weather and would like to develop relationships with those who have similar interests.  Some of the goals of the chapter in 2011 and beyond include:

  • Hosting speakers and lecturers with expertise in weather or how weather affects their business, operation, etc.
  • Supporting science fairs
  • Organizing and hosting workshops
  • Developing relationships and making new contacts
  • ...and much more!

You are welcome to join us at our first meeting of 2011.  It will be held on Wednesday, February 9 from 7:00pm-8:30pm at the Calkins Science Center Auditorium (SCIE 348) at Grand Rapids Community College.  The topic of the meeting will be about meteorological support and services provided by the National Weather Service to decision makers and clean-up crews at the Enbridge oil spill site in Marshall, Michigan since late summer 2010.  The meeting is being sponsored by the Grand Rapids Community College Sustainability Council.  You do not need to be a member of either the AMS or the NWA to attend this meeting.  Please keep in mind that seating will be limited.  Parking information is available at
