Winter Storm Impedes Travel, Causes Power Outages

A winter storm slammed Lower Michigan on Sunday, February 20th and into the early morning hours on Monday, February 21st with heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain. 6 to 12 inches of snow fell in central Lower Michigan from Sunday afternoon through early Monday morning. The heaviest snow fell in a corridor from Hart to St. Johns.

Further south it was snow and ice accumulation along with high winds that wreaked havoc with travel and power lines. Snowfall amounts ranged from less than an inch across far southwest Van Buren County, to 9 inches roughly along the Interstate 96 corridor. The lower snowfall amounts along Interstate 94 came as a result of precipitation changing over to sleet and freezing rain/ice. Ice accumulations ranged from a tenth of an inch from Zeeland to northern Jackson County, to almost 3/4 of an inch through Kalamazoo and Van Buren Counties.

Below is a snow accumulation map for southwest Lower Michigan from Sunday through early Monday morning. Click on the image to enlarge.

Some of the bigger impacts from the storm included:

- US-131 was closed due to a 60 car pile-up Sunday at M-20 near Big Rapids

- Dozens of schools were closed Monday

- Trees and power lines are down across locations that generally saw a quarter of an inch of ice or greater. People should stay as far away as possible from the power lines as they are a significant hazard.
