February 2011 Sets Snowfall Records

February 2011 will enter the record books as the snowiest February on record at Lansing. It will also rank in second place at Grand Rapids and fourth place at Muskegon. Most of the snow fell in two big storms. The blizzard on the 1st and 2nd dumped over a foot and another storm on the 20th and 21st dropped about 8 to 10 inches.

There has been a trend lately for February being a very snowy month. At Grand Rapids...three of the past five years have had a February land in the top five snowiest on record and four of the last five have placed in the top ten. At Lansing, three of the last four Februarys have placed in the top 10 snowiest. At Muskegon, the past five Februarys have all placed in the top 23 snowiest on record, with two of them in the top five. All three of these sites have records going back over 100 years.
