...NWS STORM SURVEY CONFIRMS STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE...

A NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE STORM SURVEY TEAM CONFIRMED STRAIGHT
LINE WIND DAMAGE IN KENTWOOOD...HOLLAND...AND PORTAGE...FROM
THUNDERSTORMS THAT MOVED THROUGH THE REGION EARLY MONDAY JULY
11TH. HERE ARE ADDITIONAL DETAILS ON LOCATIONS VISITED BY THE
SURVEY TEAM.


...IN KENTWOOD IN KENT COUNTY...

MAXIMUM ESTIMATED WIND SPEEDS OF 85 TO 90 MPH UPROOTED AND SNAPPED
NUMEROUS LARGE HARDWOOD AND SOFTWOOD TREES. SEVERAL HOMES WERE
DAMAGED AND MANY POWER LINES WERE BROUGHT DOWN BY FALLEN TREES.
ONE FATALITY OCCURRED IN THE KENTWOOD AREA WHERE A MAN WAS KILLED
WHEN A TREE FELL ON HIM IN THE GARAGE OF HIS HOME.

85 TO 90 MPH THUNDERSTORM WINDS ARE EQUAL TO THE MAGNITUDE OF WINDS
THAT OCCUR IN A HIGH END EF-0 TO LOW END EF-1 TORNADO.



...IN HOLLAND IN OTTAWA COUNTY...

MAXIMUM ESTIMATED WINDS OF 80 TO 90 MPH UPROOTED AND SNAPPED MANY
HARDWOOD AND SOFTWOOD TREES ACROSS HOLLAND. LOCATIONS THAT SAW
SIGNIFICANT TREE LOSS INCLUDED THE 16TH STREET CEMETERY AND HOPE
COLLEGE. FALLEN TREES BROUGHT DOWN POWER LINES AND SEVERAL POWER
POLES ON PINE AVENUE BETWEEN 7TH STREET AND DOUGLAS STREET.

80 TO 90 MPH THUNDERSTORM WINDS ARE EQUAL TO THE MAGNITUDE OF WINDS
THAT OCCUR IN A HIGH END EF-0 TO LOW END EF-1 TORNADO.


...IN PORTAGE IN KALAMAZOO COUNTY...

MAXIMUM ESTIMATED WINDS OF 80 MPH UPROOTED AND SNAPPED MANY
HARDWOOD AND SOFTWOOD TREES ACROSS PORTAGE. MOORS GOLF CLUB AND
LOCATIONS TO THE EAST OF THE GOLF COURSE...SAW THE MOST
SIGNIFICANT TREE DAMAGE FROM THESE STORMS.

80 TO 90 MPH THUNDERSTORM WINDS ARE EQUAL TO THE MAGNITUDE OF
WINDS THAT OCCUR IN A HIGH END EF-0 TORNADO.
