Summary of Snowfall 12/26/12

Storm Summary 12/26/2012:

A strong low pressure system lifted northeast from the Lower Mississippi Valley on Christmas Day and moved into eastern Kentucky on the afternoon and evening of the 26th. The storm then moved to the east coast into the morning hours of Thursday December 27th. By far the heaviest snow fell in a swath northwest of the track of the low from Arkansas, across the bootheel of Missouri, over southern Illinois and into portions of Indiana and Ohio.

Lower Michigan was on the northwest fringes of the system and began receiving accumulating snowfall during the mid to late morning hours of Wednesday December 26th. Across Southern Lower Michigan, the heaviest snow fell during the afternoon and evening hours of Wednesday. In general, snowfall totals ranged from 1 to 4 inches across Southwest and South Central Lower Michigan, with the highest totals occurring over Jackson County. Spring Arbor for instance reported 6.5 inches of new snow from the system. A band of heavier snow set up during the afternoon and evening from the Grand Rapids area south into Van Buren County, where 2 to 4 inches of snow fell. The combination of road temps around freezing and air temperatures in the upper 20s resulted in slippery road conditions and numerous accidents across the area.

The highest snowfall total from the system in Lower Michigan was received from near Lakeport in St. Clair County downwind of Lake Huron, 14 inches.
