The NWS in Grand Rapids is looking for a new Cooperative Weather Observer in the Ludington area to replace our retiring observer who provided daily weather observations for 45 years. The Cooperative Weather Observer program, or COOP, is comprised of volunteers who provide daily reports of high and low temperature, precipitation, and snowfall to the NWS. These reports are typically sent in at 7am each day and represent 24 hour totals from 7am-7am.
Current COOP observers are a mix of individuals and institutions, like wastewater treatment plants. Observers are supplied with NWS-owned equipment and send in reports via an online reporting system. NWS meteorologists receive the reports within a few minutes. COOP observations not only assist meteorologists with daily observation analysis, but also help paint a climatic picture over the course of many years.
