Severe Weather Reports From Sunday November 17th

A strong November storm swept through the Midwest and Great Lakes on Sunday. The strongest storms fired ahead of a cold front and produced a tornado outbreak in Illinois and Indiana. One tornado that struck near Washington, IL has been rated an EF-4. There were at least six fatalities. One EF-0 tornado has been confirmed in Michigan in extreme southern Otsego County. Two survey teams from NWS Grand Rapids are out today surveying storm damage. A full summary of the damage assessments will be available later today, including any tornados that may have touched down and their ratings.

This storm system was a two-pronged event, with the first wave coming in the 2-5 pm timeframe with the severe convection out ahead of the cold front. The second wave came during the 8 pm - Midnight timeframe in the form of high winds associated with the strong fall low pressure system itself, gusting in excess of 60 mph and even 70 mph in a few locations. The South Haven Lighthouse recorded a peak wind of 77 mph as the strong winds swept in behind the cold front. The peak wind speed recorded at Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids was 63 mph also associated with the winds behind the cold front and afternoon storms. A storm survey of damage in Mattawan in Van Buren County was conducted on Monday. There were countless trees uprooted or snapped across West Michigan. One golf course had multiple larger trees taken down and seven light poles snapped off at the base. There have also been reports of structural damage in Mecosta, Kalamazoo, and further east near Leslie. The more significant reports reports received so far are summarized below:
