NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICIALS HAVE RECOGNIZED TEXAS A AND M
UNIVERSITY IN COLLEGE STATION AS A STORMREADY COMMUNITY.

STORMREADY ENCOURAGES COMMUNITIES TO TAKE A PROACTIVE APPROACH TO
IMPROVING LOCAL HAZARDOUS WEATHER OPERATIONS AND PUBLIC AWARENESS IN
PARTNERSHIP WITH THEIR LOCAL NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE...SAID
GENE HAFELE...METEOROLOGIST IN CHARGE OF THE NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE FORECAST OFFICE IN HOUSTON. HAFELE WILL PRESENT UNIVERSITY
OFFICIALS WITH A CERTIFICATE OF RECOGNITION AND SPECIAL STORMREADY
UNIVERSITY SIGNS DURING A CEREMONY AT 4 PM ON FEBRUARY 11TH IN THE
ELLER O AND M ROOM 1208...WEATHER CENTER...AT TEXAS A&M.

THE NATIONWIDE COMMUNITY PREPAREDNESS PROGRAM USES A GRASSROOTS
APPROACH TO HELP COMMUNITIES DEVELOP PLANS TO HANDLE LOCAL SEVERE
WEATHER AND FLOODING THREATS. THE PROGRAM IS VOLUNTARY AND PROVIDES
COMMUNITIES WITH CLEAR CUT ADVICE FROM THE LOCAL NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE FORECAST OFFICE AND STATE AND LOCAL EMERGENCY MANAGERS. THE
PROGRAM BEGAN IN 1999 WITH SEVEN COMMUNITIES IN THE TULSA OKLAHOMA
AREA.  TODAY...THERE ARE MORE THAN 1500 STORMREADY COMMUNITIES OF
WHICH 48 ARE STORMREADY UNIVERSITIES.

THE PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO HELP STORMREADY COMMUNITIES IMPROVE
COMMUNICATION AND SAFETY SKILLS NEEDED TO SAVE LIVES BEFORE...DURING
AND AFTER A SEVERE WEATHER EVENT...SAID DAN REILLY...WARNING
COORDINATION METEOROLOGIST FOR THE HOUSTON FORECAST OFFICE.

TO BE RECOGNIZED AS STORMREADY...A COMMUNITY MUST ESTABLISH A
24 HOUR WARNING POINT AND EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER...HAVE MORE
THAN ONE WAY TO RECEIVE SEVERE WEATHER FORECASTS AND WARNINGS AND TO
ALERT THE PUBLIC...CREATE A SYSTEM THAT MONITORS LOCAL WEATHER
CONDITIONS...PROMOTE THE IMPORTANCE OF PUBLIC READINESS THROUGH
COMMUNITY SEMINARS...AND DEVELOP A FORMAL HAZARDOUS WEATHER PLAN,
WHICH INCLUDES TRAINING SEVERE WEATHER SPOTTERS AND HOLDING
EMERGENCY EXERCISES.

WE ARE HONORED TO RECEIVE STORMREADY RECOGNITION BY NOAA...NOTED
CHRIS MEYER...TEXAS A AND M ASSISTANT VICE PRESIDENT FOR SAFETY
AND SECURITY. WE THINK...ACTUALLY WE ARE CONVINCED...THAT WE DO
INDEED HAVE A HIGHLY VIABLE PLAN IN PLACE TO DEAL WITH EMERGENCY
WEATHER SITUATIONS...NOT ONLY BEFORE BUT ALSO DURING AND AFTER ANY
SUCH OCCURRENCES. WE WILL SETTLE FOR NOTHING LESS...BECAUSE THE
SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS...FACULTY AND STAFF...AND ANYONE ELSE WHO
HAPPENS TO BE ON OUR CAMPUS...IS ALWAYS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE TO
US.

THE TSUNAMI READY AND STORMREADY PROGRAMS ARE PART OF THE NATIONAL
WEATHER SERVICE WORKING PARTNERSHIP WITH THE INTERNATIONAL
ASSOCIATION OF EMERGENCY MANAGERS...THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY
MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION...AND THE NATIONAL TSUNAMI HAZARD MITIGATION
PROGRAM. THE TSUNAMI READY AND STORMREADY RECOGNITIONS EXPIRE IN
THREE YEARS...AFTER WHICH THE COMMUNITY WILL GO THROUGH A RENEWAL
PROCESS.
