Severe storms and heavy rain hit Central and Southeast IL May 13

A powerful cold front swept through central and southeast Illinois during the evening and overnight hours of May 13.  With a somewhat warm and humid airmass ahead of the front, conditions were unstable by the evening hours.  In addition, strong wind fields aloft produced wind shear, which allowed the thunderstorms to organize and produce damaging winds and hail.  Along with the severe storms, heavy rains of 2 to 4 inches were reported causing localized flooding especially in east central and southeast Illinois.  This rain will cause continued rises on area rivers.
