Routine River Stages Now Available on Sangamon River at Petersburg

Routine river stages for the Sangamon River at Petersburg are now available.

In the past, there was no automated means to register river stages at Petersburg.  Obtaining river stages required an observer to go to the gage site and manually obtain the reading.  This was generally done only a couple times a week during quiet conditions, and a few times a day when the river was in flood.   However, the U.S. Geological Survey was recently able to install an automated gage at Petersburg, which takes river readings every 15 minutes.

No changes are being made to the forecast schedule at this time.  River forecasts will continue to be issued only when the stage is at least 18.0 feet.  Flood stage remains 23 feet.
