Labor Day is an American federal holiday observed on the first Monday on September since 1894 by President Cleveland, that celebrates the economic and social contributions of American workers.  It also symbolizes the end of summer and start of school after Labor Day, and is celebrated with picnics, barbecues, parties, fireworks displays, parades, art events, water sports and other athletic events.  Oregon became the first state to make Labor Day an official holiday in 1887, followed by Illinois in 1891.
