What a difference a year makes - October 2010 vs October 2009

The first third of October 2010 could not be more different than early October 2009.  Conditions last year were frequently cool and wet, while warm and sunny weather has been common this year.  The stark difference in conditions can largely be attributed to the jet stream pattern which featured a persistent trough across the central U.S. last October, while a strong upper level ridge has persisted this year.  In addition, surface high pressure has allowed for clear skies and sunshine to add additional warmth.  On a large scale these are the general trends that are expected during an El Nino fall (last year) and a La Nina fall (this year).  For more information on El Nino and La Nina, visit the Climate Prediciton Center's ENSO page

The stats below for Peoria and Springfield clearly show a contrast between early October of last year and this year.  In fact the average high temperature last year was more typical of early November, while conditions so far this year are average for late September.  Interestingly for low temperatures, calm winds and dry air this month has allowed lows to drop well below normal, similar to what was observed last October.  Rainfall Oct. 1-11 2010 was 10-20% of normal, while the same period last year saw 450% of normal rain at Springfield and 150% of normal in Peoria.
