Downburst Event in Sweetwater Community

Results of the damage survey in Sweetwater Community of Menard County...

Meteorologists from the National Weather Service in Lincoln joined Menard County Emergency Management officials in a damage survey on Monday morning, June 6, 2011.  Damage was surveyed in northeastern Menard County, near the community of Sweetwater, Illinois, that occurrred during a severe thunderstorm on the evening of June 4th around 7:20 p.m.  The damage was consistent with that expected from straight line winds associated with a thunderstorm downburst. 

An area of enhanced downburst damage occurred just east of the community of Sweetwater.  The swath of damage was approximately 2 miles wide from north to south and continued for roughly 3 miles east of Sweetwater.  The area of damage was bounded by Tholen Road to the north, and Honey-Hart School Road to the south. 

The most extensive damage was not continuous...but occurred in pockets.  Trees sustained the majority of the damage.  Many tree branches and limbs were blown down...and several trees were also snapped off or uprooted.  A few residential structures sustained roofing did several grain bins and farm outbuildings.  The maximum wind speeds in the damage area were estimated from 75 to 85 mph.
