Tornado Climatology Database Updated Through 2013

The Tornado Climatology Database for central and southeast Illinois has been updated.  It is available at the following link:

Tornadoes reported during 2013 were added to the listings. 

Tornadoes since 1950

During the period from 1950 through 2013, there were a total of 1,047 tornadoes reported in the Lincoln NWS coverage area highlighted on the map.  The top 5 counties with the highest totals are as follows:

  1. McLean (103 tornadoes)
  2. Sangamon (75 tornadoes)
  3. Champaign (71 tornadoes)
  4. Logan (59 tornadoes)
  5. (tie) Macon and Vermilion (57 tornadoes each)

When evaluated for the number of tornadoes per 100 square miles, the top 5 counties are:

  1. Logan (9.547 tornadoes per 100 square miles)
  2. McLean (8.699)
  3. Sangamon (8.640)
  4. Tazewell (8.629)
  5. Woodford (7.577)
