Tornado Climatology Database Updated Through 2014

The Tornado Climatology Database for central and southeast Illinois has been updated, to add 2014 tornado statistics.  It is available at the following link:

Tornadoes since 1950

During the period from 1950 through 2014, there were a total of 1,063 tornadoes reported in the Lincoln NWS coverage area highlighted on the map.  The top 5 counties with the highest totals are as follows:

  1. McLean (104 tornadoes)
  2. Sangamon (77 tornadoes)
  3. Champaign (71 tornadoes)
  4. Macon (60 tornadoes)
  5. Logan (59 tornadoes)

When evaluated for the number of tornadoes per 100 square miles, the top 5 counties are:

  1. Logan (9.547 tornadoes per 100 square miles)
  2. Sangamon (8.871)
  3. McLean (8.784)
  4. Tazewell (8.629)
  5. Woodford (7.565)
