Upcoming Weather Observer Training Seminars

The National Weather Service in Lincoln has conducted numerous weather observer training seminars across central and southeast Illinois this fall.  These classes have been in support of our Significant Weather Observation Program (SWOP), a network of over 250 volunteers who provide supplemental reports both during and after significant weather events.  Members observe a wide variety of conditions, including rainfall and snowfall amounts, as well as data associated with thunderstorms such as hail size, wind gusts, and flooding.  Reports gathered from SWOP observers are then used to directly aid forecasters in the issuance of various statements, advisories, and warnings.

We have one final meeting on this fall's agenda coming up on Thursday, November 17th in Bloomington.  Anyone with an interest in weather is welcome to attend.  The presentation will cover the basics of weather observation for all seasons, and how to report information to the NWS. At the conclusion of the seminar, there will be time for questions and answers.

Thursday, November 17th
