National EAS Test - November 9th

Here are the details about a National Emergency Alert System (EAS) test which will be conducted by FEMA on November 9th:

What:    A Nationwide Test of EAS


When:    Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at approximately 1:00 p.m. CST


Why:    To assess the readiness and effectiveness of the national EAS and identify improvements


How:    The Nationwide Test of the EAS will be heard on local & satellite radio, and will be seen on local, cable and satellite TV for about 30 seconds. The audio message on radio and TV will indicate "This is a test". However, scrolling video messages on television may NOT indicate "This is a test".


NOAA Weather Radio Impacts:

  • The test will NOT be broadcast over NOAA Weather Radio stations, since it is intended to test other parts of the emergency communications system.

  • The NOAA Weather Radio Routine Weekly Test normally held on Wednesday November 9th will be held on Tuesday November 8th, between 11:00 a.m. and Noon CST.

  • If there is a potential for severe weather on Tuesday November 8th, the Routine Weekly Test will be canceled for the week.

  • Repeating...there will be no NOAA Weather Radio Routine Weekly Test on Wednesday November 9th.
