Some Statistics From the Recent Heat Wave

The heat wave that affected the area from June 27 to July 8 was one of the more significant ones in recent years, in terms of actual temperatures.  Several days featured highs of 100 degrees or higher.  Heat waves in this area typically will have more of a humidity component.  For example, the heat wave in July 2011 featured temperatures mainly between 95 and 100 degrees, but dew points were frequently in the upper 70s or even in the 80s.  That resulted in heat index values reaching between 110 and 120 degrees at times.  This year, the drought conditions allowed for the 100+ temperatures, but dew points were usually in the 60s to around 70, so the heat index was frequently within a few degrees of the actual temperature.
