Heavy Rainfall and Possible Severe Weather Tuesday

Heavy Rainfall and Possible Severe Thunderstorms Expected on Tuesday and Tuesday Night

A SLOW MOVING AND STRONG STORM SYSTEM IS FORECAST TO TRANSPORT NEAR RECORD WARM AND HUMID AIR NORTH INTO THE REGION ON TUESDAY.
THIS ABNORMALLY WARM AND MOIST AIR COMBINED WITH A STRONG COLD FRONT MOVING SOUTHEAST THROUGH CENTRAL ILLINOIS TUESDAY NIGHT
COULD RESULT IN WIDESPREAD HEAVY RAINFALL WITH THUNDERSTORMS OVER THE REGION. THE GREATEST THREAT OF HEAVY RAINFALL LOOKS TO BE
ALONG THE ILLINOIS RIVER TUESDAY AFTERNOON...SPREADING EASTWARD DURING THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. BETWEEN 1.5 AND 3 INCHES OF RAIN IS EXPECTED TUESDAY AND TUESDAY NIGHT IN THIS REGION WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS POSSIBLE EAST OF I-55.

ALTHOUGH THE GROUND IS THAWING NEAR THE SURFACE...A LAYER OF SUB-SURFACE FROZEN GROUND OVER MUCH OF CENTRAL ILLINOIS SHOULD INHIBIT THE HEAVY RAINFALL FROM BEING SOAKED DEEPLY INTO THE SOIL AND ENHANCE RUNOFF INTO AREA STREAMS...LAKES...AND RIVERS.

IN ADDITION TO THE HEAVY RAIN THREAT...THERE WILL POTENTIAL FOR STRONG AND DAMAGING WINDS...AND POSSIBLY EVEN ISOLATED TORNADOES... ASSOCIATED WITH A LINE OF STORMS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ALONG THE COLD FRONT AS IT CROSSES THE AREA TUESDAY AFTERNOON AND TUESDAY NIGHT.

RESIDENTS SHOULD BE ALERT FOR THE POTENTIAL OF SEVERE WEATHER TUESDAY AND TUESDAY NIGHT AND REMAIN WEATHER AWARE.  THIS CAN BEST BE ACCOMPLISHED  THROUGH FREQUENT CHECKS OF LOCAL AND CABLE MEDIA...NOAA ALL HAZARDS WEATHER RADIO...OR OUR WEBSITE.
