Student Volunteer Opportunities in Lincoln, IL

The National Weather Service in Lincoln, Illinois is a multi-faceted facility. We operate a local weather office serving central and southeast Illinois that provides public and aviation weather forecasts and issues severe weather warnings for 35 counties.

Career experiences are available for students in fields of study including: meteorology/atmospheric science, climatology, hydrology, natural resources, geographic information systems (GIS), and information technology. A National Weather Service office is an exciting, high energy environment during the summer as Midwest weather can be quite volatile. The student experience includes working on a research and development project with a mentor, day-to-day operations in weather and hydrologic forecast production, and severe weather operations. The National Weather Service is looking for highly motivated self-starters who desire a career experience to enhance their academic course of study.

Students must have completed their sophomore year of college coursework by June 2013. Applicants must be available to work at least 8 hours a week during the summer.

Students interested in applying for the student volunteer program must provide a college transcript, a letter of recommendation from a professor in their field of study, a resume, and a cover letter describing why they would like to volunteer at the National Weather Service. Applications are due by March 15, 2013.
