Heavy Rains over parts of Central IL July 20-22

A Mesoscale Convective Vortex (MCV) aided by a vigorous short wave trough spread slowly eastward across central Illinois Sunday night July 21-22 and interactive with a very moist tropical airmass (dewpoints in the lower to middle 70s and precipitable water values of 1.75 to 2.25 inches from I-72 south) and brought thunderstorms with heavy rains over parts of the area. Thunderstorms over Jacksonville for nearly 5 hours from 5 to 10 pm Sunday evening brought 4 to 5 inches of rain with some minor urban flooding.  The Williard Airport in Savoy measured 2.87 inches of rain in an hour between midnight and 1 am, with 2 inches of that falling in a half hour!  The Mattoon airport located between Charleston and Mattoon picked up 2.50 inches of rain in two hours between 10 pm and midnight.  The following cities had the most rainfall reported in central Illinois Sunday night... Jacksonville 4.16 inches, Arthur 3.58 inches, Savoy (CMI airport) 3.39 inches, Mattoon airport (MTO) 3.24 inches, Charleston 2.18 inches, New Berlin 2 inches, Tuscola 1.85 inches, Effingham 1.80 inches, Paris & Hidalgo 1.75 inches, Urbana 1.68 inches, Chatham 1.66 inches and Neoga 1.48 inches.

Rainfall reports from the CoCoRaHS network

In addition, between 1 and 3 inches of rain had fallen across southeast Illinois along and southeast of a Danville to
Mattoon to Effingham line on Saturday July 20 which caused some flash flooding southeast of I-70. This heavy rain was

due to a slow moving frontal boundary into southeast Illinois Saturday July 20th where tropical moisture was pooling.

A cold front interacting with a very warm and humid airmass triggered scattered thunderstorms across central and southeast Illinois from July 20th through July 22nd.  While a lack of upper-level support prevented severe weather,
many of the storms that developed were both slow-moving and efficient rain-producers.  As is often the case with summertime convection, the precipitation was rather "hit-or-miss," with some locations experiencing a deluge and
others just a few miles away completely missing out on the rain.  The highest totals were observed in Jacksonville, where one SWOP member measured a whopping 5.00 inches!  Other pockets of heavy rain in excess of 3 inches
were noted further east across portions of Douglas, Coles, and Jasper counties.
