Drought Expands into Central IL

After the significant rainfall which occurred over a large part of central through southeast Illinois this past Spring, it appeared we had put an end to any thoughts of drought across our area this Summer. However, dry conditions that have persisted over most of the area since June and intensified in August, have brought back drought conditions. In fact, the latest drought monitor shown below now has much of central Illinois in a moderate drought (D1, or brown shading), while severe drought has crept into extreme western Illinois.  Climate maps show how the dry conditions have evolved over the area this summer (click images to enlarge).  Rainfall stats for August, summer 2013, and summer 2012 for area cities are shown in the table at the bottom of the page
