How Cold Did It Get?

We have begun to analyze the climate statistics from the brutal cold snap that occurred this week.  These numbers are preliminary, until certified by the National Climatic Data Center.

Several low temperature records were established for January 6.  Most record lows for January 7 were 20 below zero or colder, so no records were established on that day.  Galesburg came closest, with a low of -16 (record of -17 was set in 1968).  However, they did not measure temperatures in 1912, when most of the record lows were established.

Monday morning low temperatures were from 10 below to 15 below zero in much of central Illinois, and were even a bit colder from Macomb to Bloomington northward.  In far southeast Illinois, around Olney and Lawrenceville, lows were in the single digits below zero.  Similar numbers were observed on Tuesday morning, January 7, with 15 below zero as far south as Effingham.

High temperatures on Monday, January 6 were below zero over nearly all of central and southeast Illinois.  The coldest high temperature was -10 at Normal.  Tentatively, this is the coldest high temperature ever recorded in Normal, surpassing the old record of -9 on January 18, 1994.

Wind chill values are only available at airport reporting stations.  (Home weather stations, which may include these values, are not included because we cannot verify that the temperature and wind equipment is mounted correctly.)  Because wind chill is a derived parameter instead of directly measured, reported wind chills are generally based on the values in the regularly scheduled observations.  Because of this, and the fact the wind chill formula was recalculated in 2001, "official" records of coldest wind chill are not available.

Airport Observations:

These observations were taken at their respective airports.  Of these sites, only Peoria and Springfield are the "official" reporting station for their communities.  At the remaining sites, climate records (i.e. for record lows, etc.) are based on another observing location in the community.

All temperatures are in degrees Fahrenheit.
