Change Notice for Users of NWS Indianapolis Graphical Services

Users of NWS Indianapolis graphical services, including the Weather Story, Graphical Nowcast, and the Extended Forecast Graphic, will notice changes in both the style and content of these graphics in the coming days and weeks.  Enhanced software capabilities will allow NWS Indianapolis meteorologists to do more with these graphics.

Over the last several years, these graphics have contained the following content:

  • Weather Story - Summarize weather and major impacts in the first 24-48 hours, issued a minimum of twice daily
  • Graphical Nowcast - Short term updates of ongoing weather and hazards, issued as needed
  • Extended Forecast Graphic - Summarize weather and major impacts in days 3-5 of the forecast, issued a minimum of once daily

Beginning April 1st, the content of the graphics will change slightly  (The content of the Graphical Nowcast will not change):

  • Weather Story - Will focus on the most significant weather impact/hazards during the full 7 day forecast period.
  • Extended Forecast Graphic - This will be discontinued as a routine product.  Instead, additional graphics may be produced as needed and included in a news story at the top of our website to highlight other significant impacts possible or expected during the forecast period.  In typical situations, this may be further out in time and thus more uncertain.

These changes will allow NWS Indianapolis to place greater emphasis on decision support services for hazardous weather, in support of the Weather Ready Nation initiative.  The typical issuance times (aside from the discontinuation of the Extended Graphic as routine) will not change.  As always, the Hazardous Weather Outlook product contains a full textual summary of the anticipated weather hazards throughout the 7 day forecast period, and is updated as needed throughout the day and night.
