TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN!" />
Areal and river flooding, as well as flooding of small creeks and streams, was impacting large portions of central Indiana. Flooding will last even longer on main stem rivers. Reports have been received of drivers attempting to drive through flooded roadways.
THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND POTENTIALLY DEADLY PRACTICE!
Flooding is the NUMBER ONE severe weather related killer nationwide, and in recent years nearly 80% of all flood fatalities occur in vehicles. It is often impossible to judge the depths of flood water, and even if you can, you do not know if the road surface underneath has been compromised, or is washed away in spots. As little as two feet of water can sweep any passenger vehicle away. Prior to this latest rainfall event, four people had already died in 2008 as a result of driving into flood waters on Indiana roadways. Do not become a grim statistic.
