APRIL CLIMATE SUMMARY FOR INDIANAPOLIS

...SEVERE WEATHER STRIKES INDIANAPOLIS DURING A WARM APRIL....

SEVERE WEATHER STRUCK THE CITY OF INDIANAPOLIS THREE TIMES DURING
THE MONTH OF APRIL. ON APRIL 2ND...SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCED
WIDESPREAD DAMAGING STRAIGHT LINE WINDS OF 60 TO 70 MPH AND HIGHER
IN SOME AREAS. THIS STORM SYSTEM PRODUCED A VAST AMOUNT OF WIND
DAMAGE ACROSS INDIANAPOLIS AND DID SERIOUS DAMAGE TO THE REGIONS
BANK BUILDING DOWNTOWN.

THE SECOND BOUT OF SEVERE WEATHER FOR THE CITY OCCURRED APRIL 7TH
WHEN A SQUALL LINE AHEAD OF A COLD FRONT MOVED THROUGH THE AREA.
THIS STORM SYSTEM PRODUCED QUARTER SIZE HAIL IN INDIANAPOLIS AND UP
TO GOLFBALL SIZE IN NEIGHBORING COMMUNITIES.

THE FINAL ROUND OF SEVERE WEATHER FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL CAME ON THE
14TH. SUPERCELL THUNDERSTORMS...WHICH ARE STORMS WITH STRONG
ROTATING UPDRAFTS...TRACKED THROUGH CENTRAL INDIANA AND DROPPED HAIL
UP TO 2 INCHES IN DIAMETER ACROSS THE CITY. AN 85 MPH WIND GUST WAS
RECORDED AT THE AIRPORT WITH THESE STORMS AS WELL.

DESPITE THE AMOUNT OF SEVERE WEATHER THE PRECIPITATION TOTAL FOR THE
MONTH WAS NEAR NORMAL. THE MONTHLY PRECIPITATION TOTAL AT
INDIANAPOLIS FOR APRIL 2006 WAS 3.63 INCHES OR 0.02 INCHES ABOVE
NORMAL. A NEW PRECIPITATION RECORD WAS SET FOR APRIL 14TH WHEN 1.55
INCHES OF RAIN FELL. THE OLD RECORD FOR THAT DATE WAS 1.43 INCHES
WHICH WAS SET IN 1922.

THIS APRIL WAS ON THE WARM SIDE WITH THE MONTH/S AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
OF 57.1 COMING IN 5.1 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. DAILY AVERAGE
TEMPERATURES WERE NORMAL OR ABOVE ON ALL BUT SEVEN DAYS DURING THE
MONTH. THERE WAS A RUN OF 15 DAYS DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH
WHEN DAILY AVERAGE TEMPERATURES WERE ABOVE NORMAL EACH DAY. THE
MONTH TIES AS THE 11TH WARMEST APRIL ON RECORD WITH THE APRILS OF
1955...1977 AND 1985. THE LAST TIME APRIL WAS WARMER THAN THIS YEAR
WAS IN 2001.

THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH WAS 32 DEGREES ON THE 9TH. THE
WARMEST TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH WAS 82 DEGREES ON THE 13TH.
TEMPERATURE RECORDS STARTED IN INDIANAPOLIS IN 1871.
