The first widespread severe weather outbreak of the spring season took place across central Indiana during the late afternoon and evening hours of Friday, May 30.
We would like to thank all our spotters, amateur radio operators, law enforcement officials, and broadcasters for their informative and timely reports of severe weather.
A National Weather Service storm survey determined a tornado touched down at 10:27 PM at 42nd Street and Post Road in Marion County Friday night and continued southeast into Hancock County until just south of County Road 200 North on County Road 400 West. The tornado lifted around 10:36 PM. The total path length is about 7.5 miles long with a width of 150 yards. The tornado was rated EF-2 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, based on damage from 38th and Mitthoefer, with wind speeds around 125 mph. Evidence suggested that the tornado touched down in an area of straight line wind damage. The straight line wind speeds were determined to be around 70 to 80 mph.
A National Weather Service storm survey also determined that a tornado touched down in northwestern Hancock County. This tornado touched down at 10:35 PM just south of County Road 700 North on County Road 400 West. The tornado tracked to the northeast until County Road 50 East just south of State Road 234 when it lifted at 10:40 PM. The tornado was rated EF-1 with wind speeds around 100 mph, had a width of 200 yards, and a length of 4.5 miles.
A third tornado occurred just north of Pyrmont in Carroll County. The tornado, which only briefly touched down at 7:30 PM has been rated as an EF-0.
Straight line winds caused the damage in Henry County according to a storm survey conducted in that county.
