Coldest Day in Indianapolis since 1997


With a low of -12 degrees, Friday, January 16, 2009 became the coldest day in 12 years in Indianapolis. The last day as cold as then was back on the 12th of January 1997, also a low of -12.  

Colder temperatures reported in Indiana at 7 am EST on the 16th included 22 below zero at Attica in Fountain County,     -23 degrees at Francesville in Pulaski County, -24 degrees at Knox in Starke County, and -26 degrees at Angola in Steuben County.  The Indiana state record low temperature is -36 degrees set at New Whitleland in Johnson County during January 1994. A map of low temperatures reported from our cooperative observers is below.

The morning low temperatures on the 16th were the coldest since 1994 in Lafayette and Muncie, 1997 at Indianapolis, and 2004 in Terre Haute and Bloomington.
