First 80 Degree Day of the Year

First 80 Degree Reading of 2009

The high temperature this afternoon at Indianapolis International Airport as of 4:25 PM EDT has reached 84 degrees. This marks the first occurrence of 80 degrees for the year 2009 in Indianapolis.

So how does this compare to normal? Since official records began in 1871 in the Indianapolis area, the average first date of 80 degrees is April 22. The earliest it has ever been was on March 8, 1974, and in 1983 it wasn't until June 5 that the first 80 degree day was tallied.

Just last year, the first 80 degree day fell on April 23. If today's numbers seem warm, they are, but they are also nowhere near the record for today: 90 degrees, set back in 1925.
