Longest Hot Spell in More than 22 Years Has Ended

After a week of hot weather...the Indianapolis area will experience cooler and much less humid conditions through Wednesday.  What follows is a recap of the hot weather that ended Sunday evening.

 

The high temperature of 96 degrees on the 15th tied the record high temperature set in 1988.

 

The minimum temperature of 78 degrees on the 10th tied the high minimum temperature set in 1896.

 

The temperature at the Indianapolis airport reached or exceeded 97 degrees 4 times this month.  The last time this occurred was July 1988. 

 

The high temperature exceeded 94 degrees on 5 consecutive days.  This has happened only 17 times in our weather history.  The last time was July 1988.  Morning cloud cover on the 14th limited this occurrence to only 5 days.

 

The high temperature exceeded 89 degrees on 7 straight days.  This has happened 66 times in our weather history.  The last time a longer streak occurred was in August 2007.  There have been 47 times when the temperature exceeded 89 degrees on 8 or more consecutive days.  The longest is 19 days set in August 1936.

 

So far the temperature has exceeded 89 degrees on 26 days in 2010.  The last year with more days is 2007...when this occurred on 37 days.  There are currently 48 years in our weather history when the temperature exceeded 89 degrees on 26 or more days.

 

The low temperature has remained above 59 degrees for 45 days.  This streak may end at 46 days on Tuesday.  This last time a longer streak occurred was in 1998.

 

The average temperature for the period August 1-15 is the 3rd highest of record and the highest since 2007.

 

The average temperature for the period June 1- August 15 is also the 3rd highest of record and the highest since 1934.
