Coldest Temperatures in Indiana Since January 2009.

The temperature dropped to minus 18 degrees at two reporting locations in Indiana on Thursday morning.   These two sites are the Frankfort airport in Clinton County and the cooperative weather observer for Knox in Marshall County.   A severe weather spotter in the Rossville area of northeast Clinton County called in a minus 17 degree reading.

The cold temperatures in central and northern Indiana were a result of raditional cooling of a extensive snow cover on a clear night with light winds.  Click here for satellite pictures of the extensive snow cover in the Midwest.  As of February 10, a good portion of southern Indiana was an “island” without snow cover.  Temperatures remained above zero in southern Indiana as a result.

Thursday morning temperatures were the lowest in the state of Indiana since January 2009.  The lowest temperature that month was minus 26 degrees at Angola in northeast Indiana.  At least 8 other Indiana locations reported readings in the minus 20s.
