Cooperative Weather Observers Needed

 ~ WANTED ~

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Indianapolis is searching for volunteer weather observers within approximately a 5-mile radius of each of the following locations for its Cooperative Weather Observation Program:

  • Alexandria 2 N
  • Attica 2 E
  • Delphi
  • Medora
  • Seymour 2 N

Precipitation measurements are needed at each location.  Temperatures are also needed at Attica and Delphi.  Anyone interested in recording and reporting such data on a daily basis via the Internet is encouraged to apply.  CoCoRaHS observers are especially encouraged to apply due to your similar experience.  CoCoRaHS is always accepting observers regardless of location.

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual or business to take official weather observations and provide a much needed service to their community.  Equipment and training are provided by the NWS.  There is no cost to the observer.

An area open to the elements must be available for the equipment.  Large trees and buildings must not inhibit exposure.

Precipitation and temperature data are very important to the mission of the NWS.  Through a network of cooperative weather stations, the National Weather Service gathers data for its day-to-day operations, long term climate records, publications, and research.  Over 250 stations are included in the network in Indiana, and over 10,500 in the United States.
