Revised Format for Hazardous Weather Outlook

The NWS Indianapolis is revising the format for the Hazardous Weather Outlook. The Outlook will now have permanent sections within each segment of the HWO. The sections will be Outlook, Hazards, Timing, and Discussion:

Outlook: A general description of what can be expected, e.g. "A slight risk for severe thunderstorms"

Hazards: A specific list of hazards that can be expected, e.g. "Damaging winds and large hail".

Timing: When the hazards are expected to occur, e.g. "The best chance for thunderstorms will be between 300 PM and 1100 PM".

Discussion: A brief discussion of the expected hazards: "A cold front will bring the threat for thunderstorms this afternoon".

The spotter information statement section will remain the same. This format will allow users to quickly view the hazards information for the period. While testing of this format may occur at this time, the product will officially begin in this format on October 3. If you have questions or comments about the revised format, please send an email to
