Warm First Half of December

Winter has been slow to make an appearance across central Indiana so far during the month of December. The chart below shows that through the 15th, Indianapolis is currently experiencing its 4th warmest December on record.

December 1889 would remain mild throughout the second half of the month and go on to be the warmest December on record with an average temperature of 46.2 degrees. Both 1998 and 2001 experienced colder weather later in December with average temperatures falling into the upper 30s in both years, respectively.  While temperatures will remain above normal in Indianapolis and throughout central Indiana through mid week, much colder air is expected to arrive late this week and into the weekend as a strong storm system impacts the Midwest and Ohio Valley.  While the storm will bring rain to the region on Thursday, precipitation may change to light snow Thursday night into Friday before ending.
