The Coldest January in more than 30 years at Indianapolis.

The average temperature for January 2014 at Indianapolis was 20.1 degrees...a tied for 11th place with January 1982.  The last time January was colder at Indianapolis was in 1979.  January 2014 was the coldest 31 day long month since December 2000. 

January 1977 is the coldest month ever recorded at Indianapolis since weather records began in February 1871.  The average temperature was only 10.2 degrees.  This was the year the Ohio River in southern Indiana froze over.  For reference...the average temperature for January is 28.1 degrees.

Pictured below is the frigid cold morning of January 6  when the temperature was 14 degrees below zero with a wind chill at times of 40 below zero.  The daylight hours of the 6th was one of the most brutally cold on record for the Indianapolis area and rivaled the conditions last experienced on January 20, 1985.  The monthly low of 15 below was the coldest since the record low of 27 below set on January 19, 1994.
