Post-tropical Cyclone Sandy Impacts Our Area

   

Tuesday morning overview of effects on the region 

  
Post-tropical Cyclone Sandy will move into western Pennslyvania by this evening.  The combination of this intense low pressure system and high pressure across the northern Great Lakes will result in very windy conditions across our  area today.

A Wind Advisory is in effect for the forecast area today with a High Wind Warning for Berrien County, MI and La Porte County, IN.   North to northwest winds of 20 to 35 mph with gusts of 45 to 50 mph are expected, with gusts of 55 to 60 mph near the Lake Michigan shoreline.

In addition, a wintry mix of precipitation is expected across northwest Ohio, northeast Indiana, and south central Lower Michigan this morning.  Some locations may even pick up some minor snow accumulations of less than an inch, mainly across northwest Ohio.

Land Based Impacts Wind
  • Diffcult travel for high profile vehicles
  • Loose items can be picked up and thrown, potentially causing damage
  • Sporadic power outages, mainly from tree/tree limbs falling onto power lines
  • Increased risk of erosion of beaches along the southeastern Lake Michigan shoreline
  • Roads and trails immediately adjacent to lakeshore areas may flood

Precipitation

  • Rain mixed with snow or sleet this morning, mainly along and east of I-69.
  • May cause patchy slippery spots
  • Accumulations less than an inch possible
Marine Based Impacts
  • Dangerous waves of 20 feet or higher
  • Storm Force Wind Gusts to 55 kts today
