How Low Can We Go?

Temperatures are expected to plunge to between fifteen below and twenty-five below zero tonight. So we thought it would be interesting to find out how low temperatures dropped to in eastern Kentucky during the month of February in years past. Below is a table of record low temperatures that reached -10 degrees or below for the month of February.

Earlier this week the temperature fell to -15 degrees at Hillsboro, and this morning (February 19) it dropped further to -24 degrees at the same location. This sets a new record for lowest temperature in eastern Kentucky for the month of February, breaking the previous record of -22 degrees set on February 10, 1899 in Mount Sterling, KY. The Booneville Mesonet site also reported a temperature of -16 degrees this morning.
