December 2007 Warmer and Wetter than Normal across Eastern Kentucky

WARMER AND WETTER THAN NORMAL CONDITIONS WERE PRESENT OVER EASTERN
KENTUCKY FOR DECEMBER 2007. WHILE LONDON WAS ONLY NEAR A TENTH OF AN
INCH ABOVE NORMAL...THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE WAS NEARLY AN INCH
WETTER. IN FACT...IT WAS THE 4TH WETTEST DECEMBER AT
JACKSON...ALTHOUGH WELL BEHIND THE WETTEST DECEMBER. BACK IN
1990...JACKSON TOTALED 12.97 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION...OVER 8 INCHES
ABOVE NORMAL. LAST MONTH FINISHED UP WELL ABOVE NORMAL
TEMPERATURE-WISE AT BOTH LONDON AND JACKSON. IT WAS OVER FOUR AND A
HALF DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL AT JACKSON...WHILE AT LONDON...IT WAS
NEARLY SIX DEGREES WARMER THAN NORMAL. DECEMBER 2007 ENDED UP BEING
THE 4TH WARMEST AT THE LONDON CORBIN AIRPORT...AND THE 5TH WARMEST
AT THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE NEAR JACKSON FINISHED DECEMBER
2007 WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 43.0 DEGREES...WHICH IS 4.7
DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 38.3 DEGREES. THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH WAS
51.2 DEGREES...AND THE AVERAGE DAILY LOW WAS 34.7 DEGREES. THE
HIGHEST TEMPERATURE FOR DECEMBER 2007 WAS 74 DEGREES AND OCCURRED ON
THE 11TH...AND ESTABLISHED A NEW DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORD FOR
THAT DATE. ALSO OF NOTE...THE 69 DEGREES FROM THE 9TH SET A NEW
TEMPERATURE RECORD...WHILE THE 65 DEGREES FROM THE 12TH TIED THE
HIGH TEMPERATURE BENCHMARK. THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE FROM LAST MONTH
WAS 19 DEGREES AND OCCURRED ON THE 17TH. NO LOW TEMPERATURE RECORDS
WERE SET OR TIED AT JACKSON LAST MONTH. TWO DAILY MAXIMUM LOW
TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE SET ON THE 10TH AND 11TH WITH READINGS OF
56 DEGREES AND 54 DEGREES RESPECTIVELY.

THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE RECEIVED 5.18 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION IN
DECEMBER 2007...WHICH IS 0.91 INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 4.27
INCHES. THERE WERE 16 DAYS WHEN A HUNDREDTH OF AN INCH OR MORE OF
PRECIPITATION WAS RECORDED...AND 12 DAYS WHEN A TENTH OF AN INCH OR
MORE FELL. THERE WERE FOUR DAYS WHEN AT LEAST A HALF AN INCH OF RAIN
WAS RECEIVED...AND NO DAYS SAW MORE THAN ONE INCH. THE DAY OF THE
13TH NETTED 0.84 INCHES OF RAIN...WHICH WAS THE MOST RAINFALL LOGGED
IN A SINGLE DAY LAST MONTH. THE MOST PRECIPITATION RECEIVED IN A 24
HOUR PERIOD OCCURRED FROM DECEMBER 12TH THROUGH THE 13TH WHEN A
TOTAL OF 0.87 INCHES FELL. ALSO OF NOTE...THE 0.34 INCHES ON THE
12TH SET A DAILY PRECIPITATION RECORD. JACKSON FINISHED 2007 WITH A
TOTAL OF 35.46 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION...WHICH IS 13.92 INCHES BELOW

JACKSON ALSO RECEIVED THE FIRST MEASURABLE SNOW OF THE 2007-2008
SNOW SEASON...WITH A TOTAL OF 0.5 INCHES.

NO THUNDER WAS HEARD LAST MONTH AT THE JACKSON WEATHER
OFFICE...ALTHOUGH THE AVERAGE FOR DECEMBER IS ONLY 0.4 DAYS. THERE
WERE 16 DAYS WITH FOG...TEN OF WHICH FEATURED DENSE FOG. DECEMBER
NORMALLY AVERAGES 4.1 DAYS OF DENSE FOG. 5,518 MINUTES OF SUNSHINE
WERE RECORDED LAST MONTH WHICH IS 29 PERCENT OF ALL POSSIBLE
SUNSHINE FOR THE MONTH. THE AVERAGE WIND SPEED FOR DECEMBER WAS 4.3
MPH...AND THE HIGHEST WIND GUST OF 43 MPH WAS RECORDED ON DECEMBER
3RD. THE MEAN WIND SPEED FOR DECEMBER IS TYPICALLY 6.6 MPH.

675 HEATING DEGREE DAYS WERE RECORDED AT THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE
IN DECEMBER...WHICH IS 155 HEATING DEGREE DAYS BELOW NORMAL. THE
SEASONAL HEATING DEGREE DAY TOTAL IS NOW 1360...WHICH IS 303 HEATING
DEGREE DAYS BELOW NORMAL FOR THE SEASON. NO COOLING DEGREE DAYS WERE
RECORDED LAST MONTH...WHICH IS NORMAL. THE 2007 SEASONAL COOLING
DEGREE DAY TOTAL ENDED UP BEING 1621...WHICH IS 562 COOLING DEGREE
DAYS ABOVE NORMAL. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THE 2007 COOLING DEGREE
DAY TOTAL IS THE MOST EVER RECEIVED...EASILY OUTDISTANCING THE 1543
COOLING DEGREE DAYS FROM 2005.

AT THE LONDON CORBIN AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 44.4
DEGREES...WHICH IS 5.9 DEGREE ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 38.5 DEGREES FOR
DECEMBER. THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH WAS 53.6 DEGREES...AND THE AVERAGE
DAILY LOW WAS 35.1 DEGREES. THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE FROM LAST MONTH
WAS 75 DEGREES...WHICH OCCURRED ON THE 11TH...AND SET A NEW DAILY
HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORD FOR THAT DAY. ADDITIONALLY...THE 68 DEGREES
FROM THE 9TH ESTABLISHED A NEW DAILY HIGH BENCHMARK...WHILE THE 67
DEGREES FROM THE 13TH TIED THE RECORD FOR THAT DAY. THE LOWEST

DECEMBER 2007...WHICH IS 0.11 INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 4.31
INCHES. THIS WAS ALSO THE THIRD MONTH IN A ROW OF ABOVE NORMAL
PRECIPITATION. LONDON HAS NOT SEEN AT LEAST THREE CONSECUTIVE MONTHS
OF ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION SINCE AUGUST THROUGH OCTOBER OF 2006.
THERE WERE 16 DAYS WHEN A HUNDREDTH OF AN INCH OR MORE FELL...AND 11
DAYS WHEN A TENTH OF AN INCH OR MORE OF RAIN WAS RECORDED. LONDON
HAD THREE DAYS WITH AT LEAST A HALF AN INCH...AND NO DAYS WHEN MORE
THAN ONE INCH WAS RECEIVED. THE GREATEST DAILY AMOUNT WAS 0.99
INCHES AND OCCURRED ON THE 14TH...AND WAS ALSO THE MOST RECEIVED IN
A 24 HOUR PERIOD FOR DECEMBER 2007. NO PRECIPITATION RECORDS WERE
SET AT LONDON LAST MONTH. LONDON/S ANNUAL PRECIPITATION TOTAL IS
