Strong Cold Front Brings Widespread Damaging Winds Tuesday Night Jan 29 2008

A strong cold front raced across the Bluegrass State Tuesday evening. The surface map below (click on the image for a larger view) shows the cold front’s location at 10 pm Tuesday evening. Temperatures ranged from the mid 50s ahead of the front to the mid 20s behind the front over western Kentucky.

A line of intense showers and thunderstorms raced eastward at 40 to 50 mph just ahead of the cold front producing wind gusts of over 60 mph in several locations. These winds brought down numerous trees and power lines and caused some structural damage. The Reflectivity Images from the NWS Jackson WSR-88D radar are shown below (click on each image for a larger view) depicting the progression of the line of showers and storms as they raced across east Kentucky between 10:01 pm EST Tuesday and 12:00 am EST Wednesday.
