Full Report and Pictures From the Two Tornadoes Confirmed in Eastern Kentucky on Feb 6 2008

...TORNADOES CONFIRMED IN BATH AND MENIFEE COUNTIES...

A STORM SURVEY TEAM CONSISTING OF NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PERSONNEL
AND BATH COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT SURVEYED DAMAGE IN THE
STEPSTONE...KENDALL SPRINGS AND POLKSVILLE COMMUNITIES OF BATH
COUNTY. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT AN EF-1 TORNADO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR
THE DAMAGE IN THESE AREAS WITH MAXIMUM WIND SPEEDS NEAR 105 MPH.

THE INITIAL TOUCHDOWN WAS ALONG STEPSTONE ROAD JUST NORTH OF THE
STEPSTONE COMMUNITY. TORNADO DAMAGE WAS EVIDENT ALMOST CONTINUOUSLY
ALONG AN 8.7 MILE PATH EAST-NORTHEAST. THE LAST EVIDENCE OF TORNADO
DAMAGE WAS NEAR HIGHWAY 60 1 MILE SOUTHWEST OF POLKSVILLE. AT LEAST 8
BARNS AND NUMEROUS OUTBUILDINGS WERE HEAVILY DAMAGED OR DESTROYED
ALONG THE TORNADO PATH. TWO MOBILE HOMES WERE ALMOST COMPLETELY
DESTROYED...AND HUNDREDS OF TREES WERE SNAPPED AND UPROOTED. THERE
WERE NO INJURIES.

THE SURVEY TEAM ALSO REVIEWED DAMAGE TO THE SOUTH OF THE TORNADO
TRACK IN THE PEELED OAK...PRESTON AND OLYMPIA AREAS. SIGNIFICANT
TREE AND OUTBUILDING DAMAGE WAS EVIDENT. THE TEAM DETERMINED THAT
THIS DAMAGE WAS STRAIGHT LINE IN NATURE. ESTIMATED WIND SPEEDS WERE
IN THE 80 TO 90 MPH RANGE.

IN MENIFEE COUNTY A SURVEY TEAM CONSISTING OF NWS OFFICIALS AND THE
MENIFEE COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGER TOURED DAMAGE IN THE DENISTON AND
KOREA AREAS. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT AN EF-0 TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN 2
MILES NORTH OF DENISTON ON HIGHWAY 1240. THE TORNADO TRAVELED
APPROXIMATELY 4 MILES TO THE EAST NORTHEAST AND LIFTED ALONG HIGHWAY
1693 APPROXIMATELY 3 MILES SOUTH OF BIG WOODS. 2 OLDER BARNS WERE
DESTROYED AND SEVERAL TREES WERE SNAPPED AND UPROOTED.
