February 2007 Driest and Coldest February at Jackson

THANKS TO A NEARLY THREE WEEK RUN OF COLD WEATHER TO OPEN THE
MONTH...FEBRUARY 2007 EASILY BECAME THE COLDEST FEBRUARY SINCE THE
JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE OPENED IN 1981. JACKSON FINISHED UP LAST
MONTH NEARLY SEVEN AND A HALF DEGREES BELOW NORMAL...AND BESTED THE
PREVIOUS RECORD BY TWO AND A HALF DEGREES. AT THE LONDON CORBIN
AIRPORT...FEBRUARY 2007 WAS FOUR DEGREES COOLER THAN NORMAL. THAT
WAS ONLY GOOD ENOUGH FOR TWELFTH PLACE ON THE LIST OF COLDEST
FEBRUARIES...BUT LAST MONTH WAS THE COLDEST FEBRUARY SINCE 1985. DRY
CONDITIONS CONTINUED TO PLAGUE EASTERN KENTUCKY WITH JACKSON ENDING
UP NEARLY TWO AND A HALF INCHES BELOW NORMAL...AND LONDON AROUND
THREE INCHES DRIER. EVEN THOUGH JACKSON ENDING UP RECEIVING NEARLY
ONE AND A QUARTER INCHES...COMPARED TO LONDON/S ACCUMULATING AROUND
THREE QUARTERS OF AN INCH...IT WAS THE DRIEST FEBRUARY AT
JACKSON...AND ONLY SECOND DRIEST AT LONDON. FEBRUARY 2007 WAS THE
FOURTH MONTH IN A ROW OF BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION.

THE END OF FEBRUARY ALSO MARKED THE END OF THE WINTER SEASON. THE
COLD FEBRUARY WAS OFFSET BY ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES FROM DECEMBER
AND JANUARY...WHICH LEFT BOTH JACKSON AND LONDON WARMER THAN NORMAL
FOR THE 2006 2007 WINTER SEASON. JACKSON AVERAGED 37.8 DEGREES OVER
THE WINTER...WHICH IS 1.1 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 36.7 DEGREES.
LONDON FINISHED WINTER WITH A TEMPERATURE OF 39.5 DEGREES...WHICH IS
2.3 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 37.2 DEGREES. IN FACT...THE LONDON
CORBIN AIRPORT TIED FOR THE EIGHTH WARMEST WINTER SINCE 1954.
PRECIPITATION-WISE...BOTH LOCATIONS FINISHED THE SEASON WELL BELOW
NORMAL...THANKS TO THE CURRENT RUN OF DRIER THAN NORMAL MONTHS.
JACKSON ACCUMULATED 6.06 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION OVER
DECEMBER...JANUARY AND FEBRUARY...WHICH IS WELL BELOW TYPICAL WINTER
PRECIPITATION OF 11.51 INCHES. THIS SMALL AMOUNT ALSO QUALIFIED AS
THE DRIEST WINTER AT JACKSON. LONDON HAD THEIR THIRD DRIEST
WINTER...WITH A TOTAL OF ONLY 5.83 INCHES...WELL BELOW THE NORMAL OF
12.04 INCHES. THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE PICKED UP 10.1 INCHES OF
SNOWFALL DURING THE 2006 07 WINTER SEASON. JACKSON AVERAGES 18.9
INCHES OF SNOW OVER DECEMBER...JANUARY AND FEBRUARY.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE NEAR JACKSON FINISHED FEBRUARY
2007 WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 30.5 DEGREES...WHICH IS 7.4
DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 37.9 DEGREES. THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH WAS
39.4 DEGREES...AND THE AVERAGE DAILY LOW WAS 21.5 DEGREES. THE
HIGHEST TEMPERATURE FOR FEBRUARY 2007 WAS 62 DEGREES AND OCCURRED ON
THE 25TH. NO DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE SET OR TIED LAST
MONTH. THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE FROM LAST MONTH WAS 3 DEGREES...WHICH
HAPPENED ON THE 6TH. EVEN THOUGH THIS READING DID NOT SET A DAILY
LOW TEMPERATURE RECORD...IT DID HAVE THE DISTINCTION OF BEING THE
COLDEST TEMPERATURE SINCE THE MERCURY DIPPED TO ONE DEGREE ABOVE
ZERO ON JANUARY 31ST 2004. THERE WAS ONE DAILY LOW TEMPERATURE
RECORD SET LAST MONTH...WITH A READING OF 13 DEGREES ON THE 14TH.
MINIMUM HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE ESTABLISHED ON THE 5TH AND
17TH...WITH READINGS OF 17 DEGREES AND 29 DEGREES RESPECTIVELY. ONE
MINIMUM HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORD WAS TIED ON THE 16TH WITH A
TEMPERATURE OF 29 DEGREES. IN ADDITION...FEBRUARY 2007 WAS THE
COLDEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD AT JACKSON...EASILY SMASHING THE PREVIOUS
RECORD OF 33.0 DEGREES FROM 1985.

THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE RECEIVED 1.20 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION IN
FEBRUARY 2007...WHICH IS 2.48 INCHES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 3.68
INCHES. THERE WERE 13 DAYS WHEN A HUNDREDTH OF AN INCH OR MORE OF
PRECIPITATION WAS RECORDED...AND 5 DAYS WHEN A TENTH OF AN INCH OR
MORE FELL. THERE WAS NO DAYS WHEN AT LEAST A HALF AN INCH OF RAIN
WAS RECEIVED. THE DAY OF THE 21ST NETTED 0.28 INCHES OF RAIN...WHICH
WAS THE MOST RAINFALL LOGGED IN A SINGLE DAY LAST MONTH...AND THE
MOST RECEIVED IN A 24 HOUR PERIOD. NO DAILY RAINFALL RECORDS WERE
SET OR TIED AT JACKSON LAST MONTH...ALTHOUGH FEBRUARY 2007 WAS THE
DRIEST FEBRUARY AT JACKSON...EDGING OUT 1.24 INCHES FROM 2002.
JACKSON PICKED UP 6.6 INCHES OF SNOW LAST MONTH...JUST BELOW THE
NORMAL OF 7.0 INCHES OF SNOWFALL FOR FEBRUARY. SNOW WAS NOTED ON 13
DAYS AT JACKSON LAST MONTH...WITH SEVEN DAYS RECEIVING AT LEAST A
TENTH OF AN INCH. THE GREATEST SNOWFALL IN A SINGLE DAY WAS 1.6
INCHES AND OCCURRED ON THE 17TH...AND SET A DAILY SNOWFALL RECORD
FOR THAT DAY. NO OTHER SNOWFALL RECORDS WERE SET OR TIED LAST
MONTH...ALTHOUGH TWO OTHER DAYS PICKED UP OVER ONE INCH OF
SNOW...THE 2ND WITH 1.2 INCHES AND THE 4TH WITH 1.4 INCHES. THE
SEASONAL SNOWFALL TOTAL IS NOW 10.1 INCHES. THROUGH THE END OF
FEBRUARY...JACKSON NORMALLY SEES 19.7 INCHES OF SNOWFALL.

THUNDER WAS HEARD 2 DAYS LAST MONTH AT THE JACKSON WEATHER
OFFICE...WHICH IS JUST ABOVE THE AVERAGE OF 1.1 DAYS FOR FEBRUARY.
THERE WERE 16 DAYS WITH FOG...4 OF WHICH FEATURED DENSE FOG.
FEBRUARY NORMALLY AVERAGES 4.2 DAYS OF DENSE FOG. 7,717 MINUTES OF
SUNSHINE WERE RECORDED LAST MONTH WHICH IS 42 PERCENT OF ALL
POSSIBLE SUNSHINE FOR THE MONTH. THE AVERAGE WIND SPEED FOR FEBRUARY
WAS 4.6 MPH AND THE HIGHEST WIND GUST OF 41 MPH WAS RECORDED ON THE
22ND. THE MEAN WIND SPEED FOR FEBRUARY IS TYPICALLY 7.0 MPH.

NO COOLING DEGREE DAYS WERE RECORDED AT THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE
IN FEBRUARY...WHICH IS NORMAL. ALSO NO COOLING DEGREE DAYS HAVE BEEN
RECORDED THUS FAR IN THE 2007 COOLING DEGREE DAY SEASON WHICH IS
NORMAL. THERE WAS 958 HEATING DEGREE DAYS RECORDED AT JACKSON LAST
MONTH...WHICH IS 197 HEATING DEGREE DAYS ABOVE NORMAL FOR THE MONTH.
THANKS TO LAST MONTH BEING THE COLDEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD...THIS
AMOUNT IS THE MOST HEATING DEGREE DAYS RECORDED IN FEBRUARY AT
JACKSON. THE SEASONAL HEATING DEGREE DAY TOTAL IS NOW 3319...WHICH
IS 71 HEATING DEGREE DAYS BELOW NORMAL FOR THE SEASON.

AT THE LONDON CORBIN AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 34.7
DEGREES...WHICH IS 4.0 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 38.7 DEGREES FOR
FEBRUARY. THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH WAS 45.0 DEGREES...AND THE AVERAGE
DAILY LOW WAS 24.4 DEGREES. THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE FROM LAST MONTH
WAS 67 DEGREES WHICH OCCURRED ON THE 28TH. THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE
FROM FEBRUARY 2007 WAS 10 DEGREES...AND HAPPENED ON THE 5TH. NO HIGH
OR LOW TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE TIED OR BROKEN AT LONDON LAST
MONTH...ALTHOUGH LONDON SET A NEW MINIMUM HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORD ON
THE 5TH...WITH A READING OF 22 DEGREES.

THE LONDON CORBIN AIRPORT RECORDED 0.74 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION IN
FEBRUARY 2007...WHICH IS 2.98 INCHES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 3.72
INCHES. THIS AMOUNT WAS GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE SECOND DRIEST
FEBRUARY...ONLY BEHIND 0.65 INCHES FROM 1968. THERE WERE 8 DAYS WITH
A HUNDREDTH OF AN INCH OR MORE FELL...AND 3 DAYS WHEN A TENTH OF AN
INCH OR MORE OF RAIN WAS RECORDED. LONDON HAD NO DAYS WITH AT LEAST
A HALF AN INCH. THE GREATEST DAILY AMOUNT WAS 0.23 INCHES ON THE
25TH. THE GREATEST AMOUNT OF PRECIPITATION RECEIVED IN A 24 HOUR
PERIOD WAS 0.29 INCHES FROM THE 24TH TO THE 25TH. NO PRECIPITATION
RECORDS WERE SET OR TIED AT LONDON LAST MONTH.  ALSO...NO SNOWFALL
RECORDS ARE KEPT AT THE LONDON CORBIN AIRPORT.

LONDON HAD 4 DAYS WITH THUNDER LAST MONTH. ALSO...THERE WERE 9
DAYS WITH FOG...AND 2 DAYS WITH DENSE FOG. THE AVERAGE WIND SPEED
FOR FEBRUARY 2007 IS 5.8 MPH...WITH THE HIGHEST WIND GUST OF 39 MPH
RECORDED ON THE 3RD.

NO COOLING DEGREE DAYS WERE RECORDED AT LONDON LAST MONTH...WHICH IS
TYPICAL FOR FEBRUARY. THE COOLING DEGREE DAY SEASON TOTAL IS
ZERO...WHICH IS NORMAL. THERE WERE 841 HEATING DEGREE DAYS RECORDED
AT THE LONDON CORBIN AIRPORT IN FEBRUARY 2007...WHICH IS 104 HEATING
DEGREE DAYS ABOVE NORMAL FOR THE MONTH. THE SEASONAL HEATING DEGREE
DAY TOTAL IS NOW 3175...WHICH IS 262 HEATING DEGREE DAYS BELOW
NORMAL FOR THE SEASON.
