A severe thunderstorm that displayed supercell attributes produced large hail off and on from Estill County southeast to Letcher County. The hail ranged in size from penny size to as large as half dollars in Estill County. However, the storm intensified over Owsley County and produced hail up to the size of tennis balls 5 miles southeast of Booneville at 818 PM. The storm produced nickel size hail in Letcher County before exiting the Commonwealth.
This storm at times had a rather robust updraft and 50 dBZ echoes were recorded well above 30,000 feet MSL at times. Prior to the storm producing the tennis ball size hail, 50 dBZ echoes reached around 38,000 thousand feet MSL with a storm top nearing 50,000 feet MSL. Below is a cross section of the storm in Owsley County from the 803 PM scan or about 12 minutes prior to the report. The left side of the cross section is on the northwest side of the storms in Owsley County while the right side of the cross section is on the southeastern side of the storms.
