October 2006 Wetter and Cooler than Normal...

THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE AND THE LONDON CORBIN AIRPORT FINISHED UP
OCTOBER 2006 COOLER THAN NORMAL. LONDON WAS TWO DEGREES BELOW
NORMAL...AND JACKSON WAS NEARLY THREE DEGREES COOLER. MUCH WETTER
THAN NORMAL CONDITIONS WERE ALSO PRESENT FOR OCTOBER 2006. JACKSON
WAS WELL OVER TWO INCHES ABOVE NORMAL...WHILE THE LONDON CORBIN
AIRPORT WAS NEARLY ONE INCH WETTER. ALSO OF NOTE...MANY EASTERN
KENTUCKY RESIDENTS GOT THEIR FIRST GLIMPSE OF SNOW LAST MONTH WHEN
FLURRIES WERE NOTED AT MANY LOCATIONS ON OCTOBER 23RD. SEEING SNOW
IN OCTOBER IS NOT UNHEARD OFF IN EASTERN KENTUCKY...ALTHOUGH IT IS
RARE. SINCE 1981...ONLY 1989...1993 AND 2001 HAD REPORTED SNOW IN
OCTOBER UNTIL LAST MONTH.
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE NEAR JACKSON ENDED OCTOBER
2006 WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 54.6 DEGREES...WHICH IS 2.9
DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH WAS 63.9 DEGREES...AND
THE AVERAGE DAILY LOW WAS 45.4 DEGREES. OCTOBER 2006 WAS THE
THIRD COOLEST OCTOBER ON RECORD. THE COOLEST OCTOBER WAS 51.3
DEGREES FROM 1988. THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE FOR OCTOBER 2006 WAS 81
DEGREES AND OCCURRED ON THE 4TH. NO DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORDS
WERE SET OR TIED LAST MONTH. THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE FROM LAST MONTH
WAS 28 DEGREES...WHICH HAPPENED ON THE 25TH AND ALSO SET A DAILY LOW
TEMPERATURE RECORD FOR THAT DAY. LOW TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE ALSO
ESTABLISHED ON THE 12TH WITH 31 DEGREES...AND ON THE 21ST WITH 33
DEGREES. TWO MINIMUM HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE ESTABLISHED
DURING OCTOBER 2006...AND ONE WAS TIED. 54 DEGREES ON THE 13TH...41
DEGREES ON THE 23RD SET NEW BENCHMARKS...WHILE 57 DEGREES ON THE 6TH
TIED THE MINIMUM HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORD FOR THAT DATE.
THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE RECEIVED 5.49 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION IN
OCTOBER 2006...WHICH IS 2.31 INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 3.18 INCHES.
LAST MONTH WAS THE SECOND MONTH IN A ROW WITH ABOVE NORMAL
PRECIPITATION AND IT HAS BEEN SINCE OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER OF 2004
SINCE THAT HAS HAPPENED. THERE WERE 11 DAYS WHEN A HUNDREDTH OF AN
INCH OR MORE OF PRECIPITATION WAS RECORDED...AND 9 DAYS WHEN A TENTH
OF AN INCH OR MORE FELL. THERE WERE 3 DAYS WHEN AT LEAST A HALF AN
INCH OF RAIN WAS RECEIVED...AND 1 DAY WHEN AT LEAST AN INCH FELL.

THE 2006-2007 SNOW SEASON. THIS WAS ALSO THE FIRST OCCURRENCE OF
SNOW FOR OCTOBER 23RD. FURTHERMORE...THE TRACE OF SNOW ON THE 23RD
WAS THE THIRD EARLIEST SNOW AT JACKSON. THE ONLY DATES EARLIER WERE
BOTH BACK IN 1989...WITH A TRACE OF SNOW NOTED ON THE 19TH AND A
HALF AN INCH MEASURED ON THE 20TH.
THUNDER WAS HEARD 2 DAYS LAST MONTH AT THE JACKSON WEATHER
OFFICE...WHICH IS ABOVE THE AVERAGE OF 1.3 DAYS FOR OCTOBER. THERE
WERE 18 DAYS WITH FOG...7 OF WHICH FEATURED DENSE FOG. OCTOBER
NORMALLY AVERAGES 4.3 DAYS OF DENSE FOG. 10,240 MINUTES OF SUNSHINE
WERE RECORDED LAST MONTH WHICH IS 49 PERCENT OF ALL POSSIBLE
SUNSHINE FOR THE MONTH. THE AVERAGE WIND SPEED FOR OCTOBER WAS 2.8
MPH AND THE HIGHEST WIND GUST OF 32 MPH WAS RECORDED ON THE 28TH.
THE MEAN WIND SPEED FOR OCTOBER IS TYPICALLY 5.9 MPH.
16 COOLING DEGREE DAYS WERE RECORDED AT THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE
