Temperatures Fall Below Zero for the First Time in Over 10 Years Friday Morning

...JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE BELOW ZERO FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OVER 10 YEARS...

A STRONG ARCTIC HIGH PRESSURE BEHIND AN ARCTIC COLD FRONT BROUGHT
THE COLDEST TEMPERATURES TO THE AREA SINCE FEBRUARY 4TH AND 5TH 1996.

IN FACT... THE 2 DEGREE BELOW ZERO READING THIS MORNING AT THE JACKSON
JULIAN CARROLL AIRPORT ENDED A 12 YEAR STREAK OF NOT RECORDING A
TEMPERATURE BELOW ZERO. PRIOR TO THIS CLIMATOLOGICAL WARM PERIOD...
THE 1980`S AND 1990`S SAW BELOW ZERO TEMPERATURES IN ALMOST HALF OF
THE POSSIBLE YEARS. SINCE RECORDS BEGAN BACK IN JANUARY OF 1981...THE
COLDEST TEMPERATURE READING EVER TO BE RECORDED HAS BEEN 18 DEGREES
BELOW ZERO ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. A TWO DAY STRETCH OF -18
DEGREE TEMPERATURES OCCURRED ON JANUARY 20TH AND 21ST IN 1985.
THEN...ON JANUARY 19TH 1994...18 BELOW ZERO WAS REACHED AGAIN ON JANUARY
19TH FOLLOWING A RECORD SETTING SNOW STORM. THE STATE RECORD OF -37
DEGREES WAS SET IN SHELBYVILLE KENTUCKY ALONG WITH 6 TO 26 INCHES OF
FRESH SNOWFALL ACROSS THE REGION. THE LONDON CORBIN AIRPORT RECORDED
ITS COLDEST TEMPERATURE EVER AT 25 DEGREES BELOW ZERO AND SOMERSET
WAS ABLE TO DIP DOWN TO -32. FROM 1981 TO PRESENT...THE AVERAGE
ANNUAL LOW TEMPERATURE EACH YEAR IS JUST BELOW ZERO AT -.3 DEGREES AT
THE JACKSON JULIAN CARROLL AIRPORT.

LOW TEMPERATURES ACROSS EAST KENTUCKY THIS MORNING RANGED FROM 5
DEGREES BELOW ZERO IN THE COLDEST SPOTS TO 6 ABOVE ZERO AT SKYLINE
IN LETCHER COUNTY. WIND CHILL VALUES OVERNIGHT WERE IN THE -5 TO
-15 DEGREE RANGE AT TIMES...PROMPTING A WIND CHILL ADVISORY FOR THE AREA.

IN THE MIDWEST REGION...SIGNIFICANT SNOW COVER COMBINED WITH A
CLOSER PROXIMITY TO THE CENTER OF THE ARCTIC AIRMASS ALLOWED
TEMPERATURES TO GET DOWN TO THE -15 TO -25 RANGE. SIGNIFICANT SNOW
COVER OVER EASTERN KENTUCKY WOULD HAVE LIKELY ALLOWED TEMPERATURES
TO DROP TO AROUND 10 DEGREES BELOW ZERO OR COLDER.
