2009 KICKED OFF WITH ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION THAT INCLUDED A
MAJOR WINTER STORM WHICH LEFT ITS MARK ON MUCH OF EASTERN KENTUCKY.
WIDESPREAD DOWNED TREES AND POWER OUTAGES WERE REPORTED THROUGHOUT
THE NORTHERN COAL FIELDS THANKS TO THE LATE JANUARY STORM THAT LEFT
AS MUCH AS AN INCH OF ICE ON SURFACES. FOR THE FIRST MONTH OF
2009...THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE SAW A PRECIPITATION TOTAL SOME TWO
INCHES ABOVE NORMAL...AND THE WETTEST JANUARY SINCE 1999. AT THE
LONDON CORBIN AIRPORT...THE JANUARY TOTAL WAS A LITTLE OVER AN INCH
AND A QUARTER ABOVE NORMAL. BOTH LOCATIONS SAW JANUARY 2009 ENDING
UP IN THE TOP TEN WETTEST JANUARIES ON RECORD...WITH JACKSON
FINISHING AS THE FOURTH WETTEST...WHILE LONDON SAW LAST MONTH PLACE
AS THE NINTH WETTEST. IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE NORMAL
PRECIPITATION...CHILLY CONDITIONS WERE ALSO EXPERIENCED LAST MONTH.
IN FACT...THE JACKSON WEATHER OFFICE SAW ITS FIRST SUB ZERO READING
IN OVER TEN YEARS. THE LONDON CORBIN AIRPORT FINISHED JANUARY 2009
ALMOST TWO DEGREES COLDER THAN NORMAL...WHILE JACKSON WAS NEARLY
THREE DEGREES CHILLIER THAN NORMAL. OF FURTHER INTEREST...JANUARY
2009 WAS THE SEVENTH COLDEST JANUARY ON RECORD AT JACKSON.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE NEAR JACKSON FINISHED JANUARY
2009 WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 31.0 DEGREES...WHICH IS 2.9
DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH WAS 39.2 DEGREES...AND
THE AVERAGE DAILY LOW WAS 22.7 DEGREES. THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE FOR
