Severe Storms Leave Behind Damage Friday Morning

Severe storms raced across eastern Kentucky this morning aided by warm, moist air in place and a cold front approaching from the west. The thunderstorms were able to knock down several large limbs and trees along with bringing heavy dowpours of rain at times. The line of storms entered the area around 5 AM and raced eastward around 50 mph before quickly exiting Kentucky by mid morning. The map below shows the cold frontal position by mid morning on Friday.

The images below show the storms as they entered the area. Linear storms like the ones pictured below are notorious for producing straight line wind damage. An interesting note is that the weak showers ahead of the main line of storms were able to bring very strong wind gusts to the surface, knocking down a few trees. The first image was the storm's position at 5 AM and the second image is the storm's position at 6 AM.

Below is a list of storm reports that have been received by the National Weather Service office in Jackson as of Noon on Friday.
