Reports and Pictures from Wednesday's Storms and Flooding

Severe thunderstorms moved across portions of Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday afternoon and evening. All of the thunderstorms produced very heavy rain. Storms tracked repeatedly along a corridor from southeastern Pulaski County through northern McCreary County, Whitley County, and into Bell County. Radar and spotter reports indicate that as much as 5 inches of rain fell, with rainfall of 2 to 4 inches common. The heavy rain led to flash flooding closing roads in some areas. As the storms passed, several reports of funnel clouds were also received. Below are a couple of photos from the public, radar estimated rainfall, and storm reports received through 10 PM EDT on Wednesday Evening.

Funnel Cloud Picture taken by Micheal Burton of Nancy, KY and forwarded to the National Weather Service by Lauren Raymer at WKYT TV in Lexington, KY.

Wall Cloud Picture taken by Betty McVey of Williamsburg, KY and forwarded to the National Weather Service by Lauren Raymer at WKYT TV in Lexington, KY.

Estimated Rainfall between 8 AM EDT on Wednesday and 10 PM EDT on Wednesday. The radar likely overestimated in some areas by as much as 200 percent due to the presence of hail in the storms. Even so, as much as 5 inches of rain likely fell in parts of McCreary County and Whitley County, with 2 to 4 inches common.
